Acorn People Review Stations: The purpose of the centers will be to review key concepts learned while reading The Acorn People, an autobiography we read in the fall. Studetns will be placed into groups of three or four. Each center will review a skill or comprehension strategy learned during the reading of the story. Each group will participate in three stations on day 1 and three stations on day 2.
Activity:
Simile vs. Metaphor: Using iPads, iPod touches, or smartphones students will scan the QR codes and sort the song examples into two piles: similes and metaphors.
Group Members Roles: 1) Scanner 2) Identifier 3) Teacher. Roles will be rotated after each example is identified as a simile and a metaphor.

Background Information:
Each day my students read a different nonfiction article as a bell-ringer. Reading grade level nonfiction is proven to help students' vocabulary as well as help them be successful in other academic areas. Comprehension strategies such as finding the main idea, summarizing, etc have been taught prior to the lesson.
Activity:
Students in groups of three will read the article "Fit for a King"
After students read they will highlight five important words. No more than five may be highlighted so choose carefully.

Refer to the article and answer the questions individually.
